Free Pertussis Immunization Available |
Pertussis Cases in Colorado Reach 64 Year High –Limited Free Vaccine Available At Teller County Public Health By Appointment
Colorado Department of Public Health has declared Pertussis (Whooping Cough) to be at epidemic level since August, 2012 in Colorado and continued cases are being reported throughout the state, including Teller County. Reported cases of pertussis are at their highest level in 64 years. Children under age one are most vulnerable, even if they are up to date on their immunizations.
TCPH still has free TDaP vaccine. For questions about the vaccine or to make an appointment to be vaccinated, call TCPH at 687-6416 or visit http://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/
Pertussis begins with a cold-like illness, sometimes a fever, and a cough that progressively becomes more severe until the person develops coughing fits. In between coughing fits, the individual can look and feel fine. Other complications can include vomiting, pneumonia, convulsions, apnea, exhaustion, hospitalization and death. Unfortunately 80% of infants get the disease from a family member. Fortunately we can still protect these children by “cocooning,” – vaccinating the people around them. Adults who had pertussis or were immunized as a child should receive a Pertussis booster, as immunity can wane. Teller County Public Health has the Tdap vaccine that is recommended as a one-time booster for adults. A limited number of this vaccine is free to adults who have contact with children under age 1. Please call 719-687-6416 for questions or to make an appointment.
