How’s your heart health?

Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of adults in Colorado and the US?  Risk factors for heart attack, stroke and other complications include:

  • A personal or family history of heart/circulatory problems or diabetes.
  • Age (especially for men over 45 and women over 55)
  • High cholesterol (over 200)
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure (over 120/80)
  • Diabetes (blood glucose 126 and above)
  • Pre-Diabetes (blood glucose 100-125)
  • Being overweight (BMI 25 or over)
  • Not getting enough exercise

How Can You Reduce Your Risk?

While you can’t control your age or family history, there are steps you can take to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.  Lowering your cholesterol, losing weight, maintaining a healthy diet and getting more active will have a major impact on your heart health.

Teller County Public Health can help!  With our new Healthy Life - Healthy Heart program, a Registered Nurse Case Manager will work with you to set goals for reducing your risk and improving your heart health.  Exercise and nutrition consultation, tobacco cessation, medical referrals and one-on-one counseling will be available to you.

It’s easy to enroll– just call Teller County Public Health at 687-6416 to schedule a Health Risk Assessment.  This quick survey will rate your risk for cardiovascular disease.  If you have an elevated risk, you can receive cholesterol and glucose testing free of charge. Participation in the Healthy Life - Healthy Heart program is voluntary, and it’s free of charge.

Call Teller County Public Health today and take the first step toward a healthy heart– and a healthy life!
